5 months imprisonment for woman who smuggled in 13 puppies

Officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) received a shock when they uncovered 13 live puppies stuffed in various compartments in a car during an inspection at Woodlands Checkpoint earlier in September.

Sharon Tan Mei Hua, the woman driving the vehicle in the smuggling incident has been sentenced to four months imprisonment for importing those puppies in without the relevant permits. An extra one month in jail has also been dropped on her for animal cruelty.

The puppies — found sedated in black cloth bags under the seats and the glove box of Tan’s car —  are currently dwelling in the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore’s (AVA) Sembawang Animal Quarantine Station to be observed for signs of contagious diseases. According to the AVA, the dogs will be rehomed once they’ve fulfilled the quarantine requirements.
