40 percent more cases of suspected child abuse in 2012

The number of suspected child abuse cases in Singapore has reportedly increased by 40 percent from 176 in 2008 to 247 in 2012.

Physical abuse cases were the most common, increasing almost twice the amount last year compared to 2008.

Sexual abuse — which accounted for 30 percent of cases last year — also saw an increase by seven cases since four years ago. Other forms of abuse include emotional abuse and neglect.

According to Channel NewsAsia, The Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) said that child abuse occur in every aspect of society, no matter the race, income, or educational background of parents or guardians.
