$3 pirated versions of ‘Ilo Ilo’ upsets local director Anthony Chen

Local director Anthony Chen is upset that a pirated version of his award-winning film Ilo Ilo is being circulated in Malaysia.

According to Guang Ming Daily, Chen himself had spotted the pirated version when he was shopping after speaking at a university there.

The film was being sold for RM8 ($3) and bore a cover picture different from the one on the original Ilo Ilo DVD, which launched last month.

2013 was a red-letter year for Anthony Chen, who picked up a series of lauded awards for his film about a Filipino maid working for a Singaporean family, including the Camera d’Or for Best Feature Film at the Cannes Film Festival, and the Golden Horse Awards for Best Feature Film in Taiwan.

Ilo Ilo also broke the $1 million box office record in Dec. last year.
