On Thursday (May 4), a day like any other turned out to be one involving a drug bust. Around 1.25pm at Woodlands Checkpoint, Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers directed an arriving Malaysia-registered bus for further checks, upon which a suspicious bag was discovered at the right side of the driver’s seat.
About 3.7kg of heroin and 1kg of cannabis were seized; and the male Malaysian driver, 36, and two Malaysian men, aged 20 and 24, were arrested. The street worth of the drugs is placed at an estimate of $307,000.
The case was passed over to the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), and a follow-up operation saw the arrest of the suspected intended recipients of the drugs. In the Jalan Pelatok area, off Upper Changi Road East, a 35-year-old Singaporean female and a 48-year-old Singaporean male were arrested. CNB officers raided the suspects’ rented room and seized about 260g of ice, 130g of heroin, two ‘Yaba’ (methamphetamine) tablets, a small amount of cannabis and a bottle of methadone.
According to the Misuse of Drugs Act, the suspects can face the death penalty if the amount of diamorphine (pure heroin) trafficked exceeds 15g or if the amount of cannabis trafficked exceeds 500g.
Investigations are ongoing.
