Feeling bored, a 60-year-old man stuck toothpicks into the seats of a public bus earlier this year. That prank had sharp consequences yesterday.

For doing the same stunt on four occasions this year, Lim Lye Seng was fined SG$3,600 (US$2,600) for committing mischief, as well as fork out SG$325.91 (about US$240) in damages.

His prickly series of pranks would have probably continued if it wasn’t for a lady who managed to catch herself in time before nearly sitting on the embedded toothpicks. In July, she alerted others about the sick joke on Facebook, where it quickly went viral. Lim was nabbed after being identified through CCTV footage.

According to TODAY, Lim had perforated the seat of bus service 123M on three occasions in July and once in August — all done out of sheer boredom. Surprisingly, no passengers were injured.

In court, the district judge noted that Lim’s actions were “clearly inconsiderate” and “inexcusable”. On his end, Lim pleaded for leniency, stating that he needed to support his two young children and his elderly parents.
