27 people reined in during island-wide operation against illegal horse betting

The police have recently reined in 27 people for alleged involvement in illegal horse betting exploits, ensuring that they’ll never horse around again.

Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) worked together with a number of their counterparts from various police divisions and launched raids at multiple locations island-wide. During the course of their operation, they managed to uncover cash amounting to around $8,000, an array of mobile phones, pagers and documents containing suspected betting records.

They must have pulled a long face when they realized that convicted illegal bookies are liable to up to five years in prison as well as a maximum fine of $200,000. Those found making bets with them can be sentenced to six months in jail and/or a fine of $5,000.
