Amidst the controversy surrounding Geylang Serai’s Ramadan bazaar about a huge chunk of the stalls not being Halal-certified or Muslim-owned, the authorities have discovered 22 unregistered food handlers who were working illegally at the bazaar. In a joint operation by the Ministry of Manpower, National Environment Agency and Singapore Police Force, the 22 unlicensed food handlers were arrested on Tuesday (May 30).
From photos circulating on social media, it seems at least two men were handcuffed by plainclothes officers.
In response to netizens’ speculations over the arrest, Pasir Ris-Punggol MP Zainal Sapari replied to a comment thread on Facebook group Halal Cafe & Restaurants in Singapore, saying that “it was a joint operation between NEA, police and MOM. During the inspection, they found unlicensed food handlers that were also working illegally which is an arrestable offence.”
Investigations are ongoing.
