Parts of Junction 8 Shopping Centre were enveloped in darkness on Sunday (Apr 9) for a good part of the day, thanks to a power trip that occurred around 7am. It cut off electricity to certain sections of the Bishan mall for seven hours, affecting 20 stores, including Best Denki, BreadTalk, FairPrice supermarket and a couple restaurants.

Shoppers weren’t just left in the dark — they were also inconvenienced, due to the power cut leaving amenities like escalators, washrooms and air-conditioners in a wonky state.

According to The Straits Times, employees at businesses in the mall said that the public dispersed as a result of the blackout, and some experienced about 50 percent fewer customers as compared to the usual crowd of Sunday shoppers.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused to the affected tenants and shoppers, and will continue to provide assistance where required,” said a spokesperson for the mall.
