A two-year-old girl died in a freak accident after being run over by a van in a Woodlands carpark on Monday.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force yesterday said they were alerted to the scene at Block 326 Woodlands Street 32 at 2:40pm.
The police said the toddler was unconscious while being conveyed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. Two other pedestrians – a four-year-old boy and a 34-year-old woman – were also taken to the hospital.
A 33-year-old man, believed to be the father, was arrested for careless driving causing death.
Investigations are ongoing.
According to Lianhe Zaobao, the victims were a family who had just finished their meals at a nearby coffeeshop when the toddler fell out of her stroller when it slid down the driveway and came in contact with the van which was reversing.
A video posted by Facebook group SG Road Vigilante yesterday showed emergency vehicles surrounding the scene with umbrellas shielding the view from the victims who were being wheeled into the ambulance.
The group said the father was seen carrying the toddler while the mother was wailing in despair. Several witnesses also rushed over to help.
A witness told The Straits Times that they saw a man in his 30s crying while sitting on the road and another said the driver wanted to get into the ambulance but was arrested.
“I heard the driver saying in Malay, ‘The baby fell from the stroller’,” a witness told reporters.
