Two e-scooter riders were busted on the first day a new footpaths ban came into “strict enforcement,” the Land Transport Authority announced yesterday.
Singapore banned e-scooters from all sidewalks on Nov. 5 but New Year’s Day saw warnings become penalties. From now on, those who risk a sidewalk ride could be jailed up to three months or fined S$2,000 (US$1,500). Neither of the two riders were identified nor were their penalties disclosed.
The pair were caught separately on footpaths in Sengkang and Yishun, the authority said in an online post. Several enforcement officers were deployed to places such as Ang Mo Kio and Punggol that day.
“#NoMoreWarnings Our enforcement officers have started taking strict enforcement action against e-scooter users who are caught riding on footpaths,” the authority wrote.
“E-scooter users can continue to ride their devices on cycling paths and [park connector networks]. We are ramping up such infrastructure islandwide to better support active mobility,” it added.
Singapore’s cycling network is set to increase from 440 kilometers to 750 kilometers by 2025.
While the ban does not affect wheelchairs and bicycles, there are plans to rope in unicycles and hoverboards under the prohibition early this year.
