Free Wi-Fi on buses? Now we’ll definitely miss our stops. In a very welcome initiative coming February next year, 300 SBS Transit buses will offer onboard Wi-Fi for commuters — but it’s only limited to bus services operating in the Bukit Merah district.

A total of 18 bus services based out of the Ulu Pandan Bus Depot will have Wi-Fi connections, with most of the services originating from Bukit Merah, Harbourfront, Kampong Bahru, Queen Street, and Shenton Way bus interchanges.

These are the bus services that will see passengers glued to their screens:

“I look forward to the free Wi-Fi as I will be able to check my email and watch YouTube videos on my bus rides without worrying about busting my data plans,” enthused IT technician Daniel Tan, who regularly commutes via bus services 93 and 195.

It’s all part of the public transport operator’s tech-driven efforts to boost service quality and traveling experience, said SBS Transit Chief Executive Gan Juay Kiat.

Starting this Sunday, interactive touchscreen panels and digital feedback panels will be implemented at the Bukit Merah and HarbourFront bus interchanges for easier access to travel information such as departure times, bus routes and service hours. This on top of charging points for commuters to juice the batteries of their devices and dispensers for umbrellas that can be borrowed for free for 24 hours via an app. Crucial really, in these stormy few weeks.
