15-minute wait at popular wonton mee stall sends hangry patron into wanton rage

You know you live in a foodie nation when folks can get mad about waiting for good food — angry enough to get into a violent, chaotic rage.

Sure, North Bridge Road Market’s Koka Wanton Noodle Stall may be one of the nation’s best spots for some hearty wanton mee, but you don’t have to smash glass displays and punch other people when a plate’s not coming soon enough.

A 54-year-old hangry man was arrested on Monday evening for throwing a vicious tantrum prompted by a 15-minute wait for his wanton mee, The New Paper reports.

Fifteen minutes after he made his order, the man made a fuss at the stall, complaining that he was hungry and threatening the stall owners. This, despite the fact that folks usually have to wait more than half an hour for their food at Koka.

Dude was so starving for some proper wanton mee that he turned aggro and smashed the display cabinet with a beer glass before running away.

The commotion brought out soya bean seller Tan Beng Gek, whose stall was situated nearby. Seeing her neighbour chasing the provocateur, she also went after them in an attempt to calm things down.

Unfortunately, the soya bean seller received the brunt of the man’s anger when he punched her face, telling her not to be so nosy. The assault knocked her into the wall and onto the floor — and she was punched on the face again when she tried to stand up.

Her siblings — who are also stall owners nearby — went out to confront the hostile man, who eventually apologised and walked away.

Tan was later conveyed to the hospital by ambulance after feeling giddy from the attack. Police arrested the man for the incident that’s been classified as a case of rash act.

If the man couldn’t have waited for 15 minutes for his mee to be served, he’d probably have a fit waiting for the hours at the Michelin-starred Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle in Chinatown.
