Police arrested 113 suspects — 80 men and 33 women — in an anti-loansharking operation conducted between Sept. 23 and 26.
The island-wide blitz was carried out by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and six Police land divisions.
Among the suspects, all aged between 15 and 72, nine were runners who helped manage Automated Teller Machine (ATM) transfers, check debtor’s personal information and make sure harassment acts were carried out by other harassers. Another nine culprits were harrassers who vandalised walls when carrying out the acts. One suspect was also arrested for providing false contact information when getting illegal loans from money-lenders.
The remaining 94 offenders assisted in bank-transfer-related activities by opening accounts and passing their account information to the loansharks to facilitate transactions.
The punishment for loansharking activities include fines, caning, and imprisonment.
