Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has taken to Facebook to recall the event that shook the world 10 years ago today: the deadly Indian Ocean tsunami triggered by a huge earthquake off Sumatra.
He revealed how overwhelming it’d been to witness the extensive damage caused by the tsunami to parts of Indonesia and paid tribute to those that perished.
“The tsunami shows starkly how fragile and uncertain human life is,” the Prime Minister wrote, “and how resilient and united we must be in the face of adversity.”
He reminded Singaporeans that “natural calamities will happen again” and when they do, “we must be prepared for them, and work together to protect ourselves.”
