10 years jail for Chinese national who strangled wife to death in Chua Chu Kang flat

An argument between a married couple turned lethal when the husband strangled his wife to death at their Choa Chu Kang Avenue 2 flat back in 2013.

Two years on, and the sentence was finally passed; 61-year-old Chinese national Hu Zi Qing has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for killing his wife.

Channel NewsAsia reports that Hu and his 42-year-old wife Liu Bijiao got into a row in the early morning of Aug 8, 2013 when she refused to return to China with him.

As she started yelling at him, Hu then covered her mouth and squeezed her neck to keep her quiet. Liu’s stepdaughter heard her screams in the flat and called the police. Liu was pronounced dead at the scene around 4.30am.

In court, Hu’s lawyer cited psychiatric reports regarding a mental illness, which attributed to him losing control during the argument. Deputy Public Prosecutors however pushed back the notion, disclosing the fact that almost every area of Liu’s body was covered in bruises, and that she suffered a neck fracture as well.
