Talk about sore losers. Muhammad Maziz Abdul Rahman was so furious over being sent off the pitch during a football match that he went up to the referee and broke his nose.
The 29-year-old driver for PSA International has since been sentenced to 10 months in jail for his vicious assault upon referee Mohd Asadullah in Dec 4 last year, The New Paper reports.
35-year-old Asadullah had been acting as a referee during a PSA Football League semi-final match between PPT United and Maziz’s team, CLD United. Maziz had been unhappy with Asadullah’s refereeing in the first half and had shouted “Stupid or what” in Malay at him. He got a yellow card for that.
In the second half, Maziz yelled the same thing and was dealt a second yellow card, which meant that he was expelled from the match. The sore loser then ran towards the referee and stepped on his foot, while continuing his angry tirade against the poor man.
Asadullah stood firm and told Maziz to leave — but received a stomp on his right thigh as well as two punches and a kick to his head. He was rushed to the hospital with a broken nose and multiple bruises on his head.
In sentencing, Maziz was also ordered to pay $2,000 in compensation to Asadullah. With Maziz in jail, Asadullah himself has since recovered from the violent assault, and even received praise from the Football Association of Singapore for being a committed referee (though he really should be getting a trophy or something).
