After last year’s Disney Tsum Tsum fest, VivoCity goes the whimsical route for Mid-Autumn Festival 2019 with a trip down the rabbit hole. The latest Alice in Wonderland-inspired showcase to grace our shores after the ArtScience Museum’s exhibition (which debuted earlier this year and is still ongoing), the waterfront mall’s family-friendly version is one illuminated with a medley of colors.
The huge, handcrafted lanterns, measuring up to 10m tall, will light up the building’s rooftop space for the next month, creating a winding journey through five themed zones based on Alice’s adventures. More than 50 artists were involved in the making of these pieces over 30 days, adorning them with a glow from 6,500 electric lamps and and 5,500m of fairy lights.
Start off at the book-shaped entrance before you meet the White Rabbit and spiral down the rabbit hole of twinkling lights and illusions.
As you emerge from the tunnel, the Mad Tea Party awaits, with a 5m-long gleaming table stacked with psychedelic-looking desserts and tableware. The treats are non-edible, sadly, but you’ve got plenty to pose with, including the precariously leaning tower of lantern teacups.
Next, the Tunnel of Soldiers takes you through rose-studded arches across a 40m-long walkway, leading out to the Pool of Cards floating above the water.
Towards the end, a regal royal lies ahead at The Queen’s Castle, a 10m-tall structure made completely out of lanterns.
If you’re interested in trying out the augmented reality (AR) element of the Rabbit’s Quest, you can scan the QR codes around the area to activate the game on Facebook and nab all the characters you see in 60 seconds. Vouchers will be up for grabs for the weekly winners.
