Tiong Bahru makes a strong first impression: hip, artsy, eclectic. The truth is, these stylish streets offer a glimpse of Singapore’s melting pot culture and diverse history. Western influences and generations-old Chinese traditions flourish against a backdrop of 1930’s art deco architecture.
We took a brand new Huawei Nova2i to capture the personality of this historic neighborhood and shoot, photograph, and record everything in picture-perfect HD quality. Time for cutting edge modernity to capture Singaporean history.
Tiong Bahru is one of Singapore’s most unique neighborhoods.
Shoesmith
Tiong Bahru was one of the first public housing areas ever built in Singapore. Thanks to this history, there are a lot of secrets hidden in its nooks and crannies. Look for a small window with floral curtains and some shoe soles and you’ve found Singapore’s only known female cobbler.
Alice Wong has been running her shop out of her Moh Guan Terrace home for years. Repair your favorite shoes and bags, instead of buying more fast fashion, and help reduce waste. It’s the little things that count!
Quirky bookstores and gift shops abound in Tiong Bahru.
Books Actually
One of the funkiest treasure troves (for bookworms, at least) on the island is located in Tiong Bahru. This jam-packed store specializes in works by Singaporean authors. Once you’ve perused your fill of Catherine Lim and Goh Sin Tub, head to the back room. It’s full of vintage housewares and other goodies.

Tiong Bahru Bakery
Next up, Insta-worthy baked goodies at this hotspot on Eng Hoon Street. Founded by a renowned French chef, it’s not exactly the epitome of Singaporean culture… or maybe it is? Either way, you won’t be able to resist the almond croissants.
Expect to queue up on weekend mornings, so bring your phone, listen to music and pass the time. Audio experts from around the world partnered with Huawei to create one of the most exceptional mobile audio experiences in the Nova2i; theater-quality, 3D stereo sound with low power consumption.

Forty Hands
One cup of coffee is never enough, so on to the next cafe. Some say Forty Hands is the best coffee in all of Singapore. You might say it’s a bold claim, but these guys do take their brew very seriously. They also take their brunch, steamed buns and desserts, pretty seriously too.

Tiong Bahru Food Centre
Half wet market, half hawker center, this institution is what keeps the neighborhood grounded. We could live without another slow pour coffee place (if we must) but don’t you dare take away our daily jaunt to TBFC for chicken rice and prawn mee.

Qi Tian Gong Temple
Tiong Bahru’s famous temple dates back to 1920. It’s dedicated to the almighty, resourceful, brave Monkey God, who helps the poor and tells truth from lies. Capture the vivid colors and intricate designs with the Nova2i’s telephoto lens, then automatically switch to a wide angle to capture the scenery. Bokeh effect and image refocusing ensure crisp photos that rival any DSLR.

Art Wood Space
It looks like a nondescript black door on Tiong Bahru’s signature bright white flats. But this Eng Watt gallery studio offers exhibitions, classes for people of all ages, plus art restoration and conservation services. Capture your artistic experiences on camera with easy selfies taken by hand signal, voice activation or even smile detection with the Nova2i.
Open Door Policy
ODP is pioneering sustainable dining in Singapore, one delicious plate of spicy chorizo and poached eggs at time. Come here for a long brunch with friends and opt in to the “Prosecco Countdown” a genius little brunch pairing where each subsequent glass gets SG$4 cheaper. Nova2i’s selfie technology, including toning flash for natural skin tones, will ensure superior snaps with every tap. Cheers to that!
Curated Records
The name says it all; this independent record store should be proud of the careful selection of vinyls. Sure, you’ll find all the mainstream releases, but you’ll also discover new artists that the shop owners believe are too good to be missed.

Booze Pharma-C
Just as the name suggests, this little bottle shop serves up the medicine you need after a long day of work. That medicine is, of course, a wide selection of craft beer from all over the world. Stock up on hoppy IPAs and refreshing pale ales from the fridge or crack open a cold one and enjoy it in-house on Booze Pharma-C’s comfy sofas. Just what the doctor ordered!
