You can help your kids keep fit and discover their artistic side! A historic dance, ballet is not only a sport but also a fun form of exercise. Students can learn from highly decorated ballet dancers at Yan Ballet Academy. The detailed curriculum of this academy is designed based on the collective expertise of the academy’s trainers, all of whom have either been professional ballet performers at leading ballet companies or have been trained by leading dance institutions around the world.

Founder Wang Yan herself has ten years of experience under her belt, having been a leading soloist performer for the Shanghai Ballet Company. She also serves as an overseas ballet master for Shanghai Princess Ballet, Beijing Right Meeting Ballet and Xiamen Ballet School. It’s safe to say that your child will be in good hands, when discovering the beauty of ballet under the expert tutelage of Yan Ballet Academy’s teachers.

It’s good to start them young! Kids aged four and up can sign up for a complete classical ballet program with certification from the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD)—some of you might be aware that the RAD is the world’s most influential dance organisation. It’s a great introduction to the world of ballet, with examinations and assessments curated to offer a holistic dance education. The classes start at pre-primary level, comprising a graded syllabus that helps the little ones develop technical, musical and performance skills. After that, students aged 11 and above can move on to the six Vocational levels. The latter provides an in-depth study of ballet and prepares students for a career in dance. Yan Ballet Academy also has toddler ballet classes for those aged 2.5 to 4 years old, in preparation for the RAD classes.

Students who would like to go beyond the RAD program can try out for Yan Ballet Academy’s Elite program, which applies training methods used in professional ballet companies, like the renowned Vaganova method. Students who are part of this program have gone on to achieve great accolades, including close to 200 gold medals in four years, including the first-ever gold medal for Singapore at the Asian Grand Prix. Yan Ballet Academy has an extensive performing and competition training program, for those interested in aiming for the stage.

Yan Ballet Academy has also helped many students apply for Direct School Admission (DSA) to secondary schools in Singapore, using either ballet DSA or dance DSA.

Besides the shiny awards, ballet can benefit kids in many ways. It teaches discipline, artistry, focus and professionalism and is a great foundation for dance and for life in general. Ballet movements and exercises can also improve cardiovascular health, flexibility and posture.  Ballet can also encourage children to lead an active lifestyle from a young age. The benefits aren’t just physical either, as ballet is also a way through which children can express themselves. Nurture virtues like focus, poise and determination in your child, traits that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.

“The benefits of ballet are both physical and mental. Ballet dancers learn to control and coordinate their bodies, improve their flexibility and posture,” explains Christian Reksten-Monsen, Managing Director of Yan Ballet Academy. “Ballet dancers gain a sense of discipline, focus and learn to follow instructions. They learn how to express themselves creatively and gain self-confidence in performing in front of others. All of these skills are useful, not just in dance, but in life itself.”
