Circular Road’s going green for St Patrick’s Day — quite literally. The road will be closed off to cars for a weekend in March to host the street festival featuring Irish rock ‘n’ roll tunes, Irish dance performances, family-friendly activities such as face-painting and balloon sculpting and, of course, loads of Guinness Stout.
Participating restaurants and bars along the street include the likes of Boomarang, Hero’s, Mogambo, Molly Malone’s, Ô COMPTOIR and Uncabunca, and something new to look forward to this year is the appearance of specially crafted Guinness-infused or ‘green’ dishes and drinks on their menus for the entire month. These include items like Mogambo’s Guinness Punch ($10) made of said brew, cinnamon, nutmeg and condensed milk, Hero’s lamb and Guinness stew ($18), and Roll Up’s pahadi poulet of chicken kebabs marinated in mint. We’ll let you know how all that goes down.
For the weekend itself, spend time flitting between the two stages for a variety of melodies. The ‘traditional’ stage focuses on Irish step dancing and folk tunes by The Singapore Trad Collective, a band that’ll be using classic Irish instruments like the Uilleann pipes, hammered Dulcimer, banjo and fiddle to create music.
On the edgier side is the ‘rock’ stage, which spotlights Irish rock and folk-rock local and Singapore-based Irish acts such as Babushka, Gan Ainm, The Craic Horse, The Rock Rosettes and The Shambollicks. Then there’s the usual DJ set to make sure the party doesn’t end till you have a good time.
St Patrick’s Day Street Festival is on from Mar 17-19, Fri 6pm-late, Sat & Sun 2pm-10pm at Circular Road, between North Canal Road and Lorong Telok. Free.
