Never has there been a festival so assured of its target audience that they blatantly (and unironically) slap it on as their very title.
No prizes for guessing who the target audience is for Hipster Festival 2017.
Initially thought to be a self-aware parody of usual hipster trappings like beards, grandparent-era fashion, organic food, vintage products, and the acrid smell of pretentiousness, it seems that the organisers are actually genuine in their branding.
Without an iota of shame, they declare themselves as the “1st Trend Setting Lifestyle event” in Singapore for all. Whatever that means.
Set to kick off on March 11, the two-day festival promises a “full weekend of hipster food, fashion, fun and music” at the open field near Queen Street, opposite Rochor Centre (Update: The venue has been changed to The Lawn at Foothills, Fort Canning). Gotta give them props for ambition too, because they’re planning to feature over 160 businesses.
As you can see, their emphasis on being a hipster mecca couldn’t be stronger. Good lawd, even their slogan yells out to the abyss: “HAVE YOU HIPSTER YET”.
We hate to break it to the organisers, but branding a festival as a full-fledged hipster gala will mean that it’ll be too mainstream for actual hipsters to attend. Also, ‘hipster’ has been a dirty, overused word for years already, so there’s that. But then again, who are we to stop folks from enjoying their vintage bicycles and moustache waxes? Head on to their Facebook page for more details.
