UPDATE: Zouk Singapore has responded about the controversy. “Zouk would like to clarify that DJ Fadi (Fila) was not at any point of time asked to end his set prematurely before the contracted set end time of 330am.”
Originating from Egypt, DJ duo Aly & Fila have been busy bringing their super hot trance bangers across the world, exposing the global EDM scene to the little known scene in their part of the world. Though both produce music together, only Fila (Fadi Wassef Naguib) goes on tour, because Aly has to avoid loud music due to a severe ear injury.
Fadi was all too happy to play in Singapore once again at Zouk as the very first stop in his 2016 tour that’ll have him play in the likes of Ultra Music Festival in Miami, EDC Festival in New York, and more. From what we’ve gathered though, the tour got to a very bad start here last Saturday — so much so that he’ll never play at our iconic nightclub anymore.
Multiple sources claimed that Norashman Najib — the son of Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak — allegedly used his VVIP power to cut short Fadi’s set. Why you may ask? Oh, because he apparently wanted to play his own DJ set. Yes, a prime minister’s son allegedly wanted his own 15 minutes of fame, so he kicked out an actual professional (#42 on DJ Mag’s top 100 DJs last year) from his own showcase.
“…it seems that Zouk here wants someone else to play. Not only because of that! Because apparently he’s the son of a prime minister,” Fadi says to his dismayed audience in captured footage of that night.
“Thank you so much, enjoy my last track. I’ll see you somewhere in the future. Not in Zouk anymore! Because I won’t play in Zouk any-fucking-more,” he declared. “They’ve insulted me, but I love you guys.”
Zouk Singapore hasn’t confirmed if it is indeed true — but if it is, man what a fucking dick move. This would be the first sign of trouble for Zouk, who were recently absorbed under Malaysian conglomerate Genting Group. Considering that fact, it’s not such a far-fetched idea that the son of the Malaysian prime minister could hold such sway over Singapore’s premier nightlife destination. If the once-revered stronghold are showing cracks in their management already, then it seems that Zouk’s goal to get into the top spot of DJ Mag’s annual rankings won’t be coming true after all.
