Singaporeans: How travel savvy are you really?

Presented by

Do you deserve a free first class upgrade or should we send you to the back of the line? Here’s 11 questions to help you find out.

1. Your go to source of travel inspiration is:
a. Inspiration?! I try to leave my flat as little as possible.
b. Does spinning the globe and pointing count?
c. Travel bloggers and Instagram. Looks like Iceland is the new place to be.
d. Government statistics, so I don’t accidently go off the beaten path.

2. When do you book your air travel?
a. Last minute.
b. Lelong lelong! Whenever there’s a good deal!
c. At least 1 month before to save on price, but I never buy plane tickets on the weekend. Did you know it costs more?
d. I consult a series of planning apps to determine the lowest cost ticket, then I call my travel agent. Then I call my mom’s travel agent. So, around… six months before.

3. Your airport outfit is:
a. Whatever I roll out of bed in that day.
b. Inspired by a quick Google of “celebrity airport outfit” – if it’s good enough for T. Swift, it’s good enough for me. (Who cares if I copy her stage outfit by mistake?)
c. Simple, black and comfortable. There’s no time to mess with clothes when I’m power walking to the gate.
d. Bright neon and coordinated with my partner, so we can easily find each other.

4. The last time you booked a group tour was:
a. Never, but I’ve been on a few. Beats having to plan everything yourself.
b. Once, when I thought I was booking a private tour in Paris. Ended up in a crowd of hundreds at the Louvre. Oh well!
c. Never, I prefer to explore on my own.
d. Last week. Hopefully this time they’ll let me hold the flag!

5. Your thoughts on selfie sticks:
a. What?? No lah.
b. Something I lose every time I travel.
c. Sometimes handy but I prefer to ask a passerby to snap a pic. You get to interact and the picture is more natural and unique in the Instagram feed.
d. I never travel without my closest friends and family, so there’s always someone to take a selfie. Also, we each have selfie sticks.

6. Your packing secret is:
a. Pack super light.
b. Pay for extra weight.
c. Roll up clothes to save room.
d. Get another person in your group to take extra bags for you. You’d do it for them!

7. Your worst immigration counter experience was:
a. Every immigration counter experience is the worst.
b. That time I was on the Australian show Border Control. I think they found too many packs of Maggi noodles in my suitcase, or was it my snakeskin handbag collection? No biggie though.
c. It can get tricky with so many stamps and visas from around the world, but I’m not phazed by immigration counters.
d. I actually enjoy the orderly process of immigration. I pre-empt officers with my own questions.

8. On vacation you’re not afraid to splurge on:
a. Nothing. I pay for essentials only.
b. Everything. I can’t be bothered to research.
c. Experiences, great local food and perhaps a cool souvenir.
d. Gifts for everyone I know.

9. You’re in Bangkok on vacation and it’s rush hour. Your mode of transportation is:
a. Whatever’s closest.
b. Taxi. I’d rather sit in traffic than sweat.
c. BTS or MRT. And did you know Bangkok has UberX and GrabCar?
d. Cancel all plans and hunker down in a mall for the next 4 hours. Bangkok traffic is notorious.

10. You make sure dinner is delicious by:
a. Going to McDonald’s. Hey, it’s easy.
b. Trying every street food stall I see. If the locals can do it, so can I. Digestive system be damned.
c. Reading local blogs or asking a local friend. But I’m usually familiar enough with the cuisine to order myself.
d. Sticking with the tour leader’s suggestion. He’s leader for a reason, you guys.

11. Your biggest adventure on a trip is:
a. Getting to the hotel. After that I stay put.
b. Everyday’s an adventure; getting lost, trying new things. I don’t hold back when I travel.
c. I’m pretty worldly already, but I make an effort to try at least one local activity, food or destination when I travel.
d. Whatever my group wants to do!

Mostly A’s – You want to stay home.
Not big on exploring, huh? We get it; leaving this Little Red Dot can be hectic and hurried and unfamiliar. A utilitarian at heart, you don’t like to stop and smell life’s proverbial roses. That’s ok, but you could really get a lot more out of your vacations if you put in some effort and enjoy your new surroundings. Go ahead, live a little!

Mostly B’s – You travel with reckless abandon.
Whoa there, settle down. You love adventure, to the point of recklessness. It’s ok with you if you miss a flight or spend more money than you should. Hey, you might not be savvy but at least you’re enjoying each moment and isn’t that what it’s all about?

Mostly C’s – You’re outsmarting the locals.
We want to be on your flight. You mix the right amount of planning with a sense of adventure worthy of a world traveler. You know when to be laid back and when to get your itinerary out. We wouldn’t be surprised to see you in first class soon. You, friend, are an exemplary Singaporean world traveler.

Mostly D’s – You travel with the herd.
Put down the tour group flag. Now back away slowly. You might like to travel but you’re not letting yourself living in the moment. Our advice? Forget about other people’s expectations and try a solo trip for once. Your attention to detail and enthusiasm will get you far.
