Out of 700 entries, Under the Turban was chosen to make its world premiere at the 19th UN Association Film Festival in October. So congrats are in order for the husband-and-wife duo — director Satinder Garcha and executive producer Harpreet Bedi — who helmed the film. They’re the first Singaporeans to have a feature-length work screen at one of the oldest documentary festivals in the US.
An exploration of identity and self-discovery among Sikhs, Under the Turban came about after the couple’s young daughter Zara questioned what it meant to be Sikh. And so the documentary provides a glimpse into the world’s fifth largest religion with first-hand accounts and academic insights.
Plans are in the pipeline to screen the documentary for the public in Singapore.
