Instead of models donning tight, plunging dresses, this catwalk in Tokyo had a different kind of fashion in mind. Strutting gracefully down the runway were women clad in hijab, with long, shimmering robe garments in Japan’s first fashion show for Muslim women: the Tokyo Modest Fashion Show. Exactly what we need in today’s unfortunate climate of fear and hate towards Muslims.
Singapore-based Muslim fashion house Meem was one of the exhibitors in the event, showcasing the brand’s latest collection, which exemplified its trademark minimalism and modesty. Meem founder Nur Hanis fused traditional Japanese elements with Muslim style — the result of which was a collection that exuded colourful class and elegance without compromising on religious faith.
According to Reuters, around 10 brands — mainly from Singapore — showcased their creations on the catwalk during the Halal Expo Japan on Nov 22.
