Two Singapore photographers have come together to put a face on the country’s essential workers, the people that keep the city running behind the scenes.

We The People Of Singapore is a photography project by travel photographer Alwyn Chong and Leica M ambassador Adele Chan that celebrates the contributions of the city-state’s essential workers through portraits.

“I have wanted to do something for the front-liners who have kept Singapore going these two to three years, especially those that are unseen — and both citizens and non-citizens alike,” Chong said in a news release.

The people featured include those from both the government and private sectors, from port workers to ambassadors. Each photo is accompanied by a short background on who they are and what they do for the society.

The duo hopes to receive suggestions on who else they should profile for the project and spur conversations that raise awareness about those whose work often goes unrecognized.

The project launch is also in line with the theme of this year’s National Day, which is coming up next week on the 9th.

“This year’s NDP theme of ‘Stronger Together, Majulah!’ represents the message we hope to send through these photos; that when we come together as a community and support each other in our various roles, we can truly emerge from life’s challenges stronger,” Chan said.
