147 films lined up for Singapore International Film Festival in December

The full lineup for the 25th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) has been revealed, and boy it’s a doozy.

Returning after a two-year hiatus, SGIFF 2014 will take place from Dec. 4 to Dec. 14, offering an impressive selection of 147 features and short films from 50 countries. Screenings will take place across Singapore in venues such as the National Museum, The Arts House, Marina Bay Sands and even the Shaw Theatres Lido cineplexes.

The festival organisers unveiled the full film lineup earlier on Tuesday in a press conference at Marina Bay Sands, announcing an ambitious inventory of events, programmes and schedules for SGIFF.

Launching the festival proper on Dec. 4 is Ken Kwek’s black comedy Unlucky Plaza, the first time that a Singaporean film will be opening SGIFF. The move is a significant one that indicates their commitment to showcasing local talent.

Highlights of the announcement include the return of the Singapore Panorama section, offering quintessential filmic slices of life of Singaporeans with the likes of Lei Yuan Bin’s Flats — a documentary following the daily lives of three single women — and The Obs: A Singapore Story, a long awaited documentary on one of the country’s most inventive music outfit The Observatory.

Other than regional films, SGIFF 2014 will also offer international features including Croatian drama These Are The Rules, France’s ode to electronic music Eden, and Palme d’Or winner Winter Sleep by acclaimed Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan.

“Singapore needs a festival like this, one that contributes significantly to the film industry here in Singapore and plays a wider role in participating in the international film scene,” says festival chairman Mike Wiluan.

Tickets are now on sale at Sistic; more details available on the official SGIFF website.
