This Sengkang mall has finally solved its identity crisis.
Initially renowned for years as Compass Point, the shopping centre closed in October last year for a massive revamp — and its management took the chance to let the public rename it.
Blissfully unaware of the dangers of letting the internet name things in polls (Re: Boaty McBoatface, Mister Splashy Pants), they held a naming contest on social media. In the end, the name they picked from the lot was ‘1 Sengkang Mall’ — a truly unimaginative moniker that was roundly criticised as such. The woman who came up with it walked away with $1,000 though.
Right now it looks like scoring $1,000 was the only thing that the winner can be proud of — the management has decided on switching the name of the mall again. Speaking to The Straits Times, the malls’ owner M&G Real Estate noted that they’ve received a lot of feedback from customers who want the old name back. Totally understandable, considering 1 Sengkang Mall is totes meh.
Deciding to put ‘Compass’ back in the name, they went with ‘Compass One’ which they claim to reflect “a fresh, lively and vibrant experience” as well as their “ambition to make this the best shopping experience in the area”. Oh, ok.
In any case, residents can look forward to Compass One reopening their doors some time in the third quarter of the year with anchor tenants Kopitiam, Cold Storage and Sengkang Public Library. M&G promises over 50 new retailers, newly-improved amenities and refurbished environs. No news of veteran departmental store Metro reopening their shutters though.
