As the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) preps up for their 2015 iteration this November, its organisers have announced that they’ll be featuring two local silver screen classics from the ’90s — Eric Khoo’s Mee Pok Man and Yonfan’s Bugis Street.
“Mee Pok Man and Bugis Street are two classics that not just tell a Singapore story, but also reflect a milestone of an era for our filmmaking industry,” enthuses SGIFF Executive Director Yuni Hadi. “They have inspired bolder voices since their premieres in 1995 and are exemplary of the quality storytelling our filmmakers are capable of.”
With over 1,400 submissions received since an open call made in May, the 26th edition of the festival will see yet another breathtaking lineup of independent films from all around Asia, and both Mee Pok Man and Bugis Street stands tall together with the rest of the pack. Who could ever forget Lim Kay Tong’s unforgettable turn as a vicious pimp, as well as the glamorously seedy sights of Bugis’ streets. Truly unparalleled local films that made vast waves in the region and beyond.

“As both films mark their 20th anniversaries this year, it is fitting for the Festival to celebrate their legacies that have helped pave the way for the rich cinematic culture we enjoy today.”
SGIFF is happening this Nov 26 till Dec 6 across various theatres around town. More details on the SGIFF website.
