From old to new estates, Singapore’s HDB homes offer a glimpse into the different layers of local culture and creativity, with each flat owner expressing their individuality in the design and decor of their personal space. A block of flats may look uniform on the outside, but you’ll find a world of difference when you step into one home after another.
So it’s no surprise that this colorful diversity intrigued Japanese artists Eitaro Ogawa and Tamae Iwasaki — as well as Tomohisa Miyauchi, a senior lecturer at the Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore — enough to capture it all on camera.
The trio’s three-year journey, which began around the time of the SG50 celebrations, consisted of delving into and documenting 118 HDB homes to create a 700-page photo book. Along the way, they met flat owners of different cultures, generations and backgrounds, all of whom opened up their homes to be photographed.
Check out a couple snapshots below.
Selected images from the photo book will be displayed at HDB Homes of Singapore: The Photo Exhibition, which is on from now till June 27 at SPRMRKT, 2 McCallum St. The photo book retails for $50 at SPRMRKT and SPRMRKT Daily.
