For those you who haven’t had a chance to explore the nearby St John’s Island, you’re in luck, ’cause the first curated trail was officially launched on Saturday (Sept 2), along with free guided tours. Spanning 2.8km, the trail begins at the entrance of the main jetty and continues to 15 stations that are marked with signboards.
Along the way, you’ll see coastal forests and coral reefs, and get the chance to spot birds like the great-billed heron and reptiles such as the gold-ringed cat snake and the critically endangered hawksbill turtle. You’ll also make a pitstop at the Marine Park Outreach and Education Centre to find out more about local marine life.
According to tour organizers — the National Parks Board (NParks) itself — you can also stroll along the intertidal flat at the lagoon during low tide to keep an eye out for sea stars, sea cucumbers, crabs and marine snails.
Should you need a guide, trained volunteers will lead you along the 1.6km path and bring you to 14 stations on the trail in 90 minutes. Starting in October, the guided tours will be available on the first weekend of each month, and you can register online.
