Popular Holdings, which outbid Malaysia’s Berjaya Books for the rights to Borders’ Singapore, has officially launched the chain’s first store since its 2011 folding, at Westgate.
The new shopping centre hosted the return of the well-loved bookstore on Dec. 2, where about 1,000 customers were said to have registered for its SGD20 annual membership.

When we paid a visit, we were disappointed to see that the homey, library vibe provided by the bookstore’s former space at Wheelock Place now occupied by Marks & Spencer, is gone.
Borders Singapore now looks like… well, Popular Bookstore, with its low island and glass displays, as well as bookshelves all pushed up against the wall to make room for walking and browsing.
