Everyone has a compelling life story to tell. That’s why the Bidadari community has been given a platform to share its tales through a photo exhibition and human library event. Held at the National Library Board Plaza, the showcase will highlight 57 images of familiar streets and buildings around the Bidadari vicinity — these photos were taken this year by 23 photojournalism students from Nanyang Technological University’s Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information.

At the human library, some of the interesting people you’ll meet include an Oxford University graduate who joined the funeral profession three years ago (and has a collection of mini caskets), and a 62-year-old film camera enthusiast who has more than 200 vintage cameras in his collection.

Since he was four, Tng Hok Chai has lived in Joo Seng. Formerly a welder, he had to stop working due to medical reasons. Now, the 56-year-old relies on residents’ donations for food to eat.

Now that Bidadari is due for new developments, there may come a time when the area will be unrecognizable even to those who grew up there. So this weekend’s your chance to hear the residents’ stories and catch a glimpse of what Bidadari looks like before the new takes over the old. Other activities to look out for include game booths, a photo booth and a Singapore map-shaped comment wall for the public to share their thoughts.

Bidadari and Beyond is on Apr 1-2, 10am-8pm at L1, National Library Board Plaza. Free.
