Local photographer takes over The New Yorker Photo’s Instagram page for a week

Singaporean photographer Nguan is no stranger to having his work exhibited in festivals and museums. But this one’s a little different. Taking over the official Instagram account of The New Yorker‘s photo department for a week, he’s showcasing elements of our Little Red Dot and local culture in gorgeous, pastel-tinted hues. We just can’t get enough of how beautiful he makes Singapore look.

Greetings! My name is @_nguan_ and I’m taking over New Yorker Photo’s Instagram this week. My photographs are about big city yearning, ordinary fantasies and emotional globalization. In the coming days I will share mostly new or unseen work from my series “Singapore”. It happens to be National Day in Singapore today – the country is celebrating her 51st birthday!

Singaporeans, upset at the unrelenting pace of change in the country, are lamenting the imminent loss of Rochor Centre. These hulking, rainbow-colored blocks of apartments and shops will be demolished soon to make room for a new highway. A vast development like Rochor Centre would itself have displaced communities and homes when it was built in 1977. Photo by @_nguan_

When I walk around Singapore’s public housing estates in the mid-afternoon, I see only kids, the elderly and their domestic helpers. Everyone of a working age is at their jobs. This girl was running rings around a railing to entertain herself. Photo by @_nguan_

This is @_nguan_ taking over with pictures from Singapore. East Coast Parkway is a 12-mile highway that runs along our southeastern coast. It’s lined with delicate pink flowers on every side. I think it’s one of the most scenic roads in the world. It was even more exquisite before one end of it was lopped off three years ago and replaced by an underground tunnel.
