Founders of local label Depression Andrew Low and Kenny Lim are in a bit of a tizzy.
The Urban Outfitters online shop, where one of their offerings — a crop top with the word “depression” printed all over it — was selling until recently, has been accused of glamourising the illness, contributing to a history of ill decisions made by the company.
According to Buzzfeed Business, Urban Outfitters has since apologised and the product, the only one from the Depression label available on the website, is now listed as ‘sold out’.
In a report by Her World Plus, Low and Lim justify themselves.
“This Depression t-shirt is a brand piece, made specially for our fans of seven years; for fans who love our brand,” Lim explained.
He also revealed that the name was born when the two finally decided to leave the cutthroat environment of the corporate world where they’d been depressed with their lifestyle, to pursue a dream.
Lim said they wanted to remind people that if they didn’t like the way they were living, they had the power to change their life.
