Congrats are in order to homegrown furniture and homeware brand, Scene Shang — it now calls a gorgeously minimalistic space in the Kampong Glam area home. Influenced by classic Chinese design elements and heritage, the three-year-old label offers a contemporary twist on tradition, with subtle nods to the culture that inspires it.
Scene Shang’s newest collection, titled ‘Jia Ju’ (which means gathering or coming together at home in Mandarin), features four pieces — a dining table, a chair, a rocking stool and a sideboard. Taking inspiration from the Ming Dynasty aesthetic, these furniture items boast an elegant, modern design, with clean lines and a ‘less-is-more’ interpretation.
Besides these lovely new additions, the space will also stock all of Scene Shang’s signature designs, including the award-winning Shang System —a unique stackable system of components — the maverick sofa, art deco cushions, the banker desk lamp and more.
Oh, and not everything here is from the local label. The store also displays wares from international indie brands, such as recycled cups from Kinto Glassware, porcelain pieces by Middle Kingdom, art deco fans by Imasu and 3D mixed media art pieces of Peranakan windows by Arthur P.Y. Ting.
In the back sits a mini Chinese garden and a courtyard area, where workshops, exhibitions and installations will be held throughout the year (May will welcome flower arrangement classes by local florist Triceratops). Drop by to check it out for yourself.
Scene Shang is at 263 Beach Rd. Tues-Sun 11am-9pm. Prices range from $16-$3,700.
