It’s been decades since novelist/playwright Michael Chiang’s Army Daze was released — the book went on to become a theatre adaptation and a film — and now that the popular local comedy turns 30 this year, its long-awaited sequel is finally here. Say hello to Army Daze 2, the brand new production that will reunite audiences with mummy’s boy-turned-SAF regular Malcolm Png.

The script, written by Michael Chiang, sees Png as the director of public affairs of the Singapore Armed Forces. And since it’s happening three decades later, it’s time for his son to enter national service. This surfaces memories of his own experience in NS, so he gathers four of his old buddies to reminisce. Running parallel to Png’s story are the adventures of his son and his bunk mates in Basic Military Training.

Expect loads of witty twists and hilarious shenanigans from a cast that includes Hossan Leong, Chua Enlai, Jo Tan, Oon Shu An, Saiful Amri and Shane Mardjuki — they’ll be directed by Beatrice Chia-Richmond, with original melodies by Don Richmond. Oh, and of course it’ll be out in August — National Day and all.

Army Daze 2 is on from Aug 4-20, various times at Drama Centre Theatre. $43-$98.
