Sentosa’s all about sand, sand and more sand this September, with what’s being hailed as Southeast Asia’s biggest sand festival arriving on the shores of Siloso Beach. Featuring more than 30 larger-than-life and painstakingly carved sand sculptures towering at five metres in height, Sentosa Sandsation 2017 will see exhibits spread across 2,400 sqm and three zones along the beach stretch.

But the best part of it all is: Free admission to Sentosa (via Sentosa Express and Sentosa Gateway) from Sept 4-10 for Singapore residents. So if you’re planning a day trip to the island, you know when to do it.

At the fest, look out for 15 3D sculptures inspired by local culture and colloquial slang phrases such as “blur like sotong, gabra like zebra”, “so wayang” and “so jialat”. (Not exactly sure how these will turn out, but alright.) These exhibits will combine visuals with audio and even take on new life with augmented reality app MixGo.

Fourteen world-renowned sand experts from across the globe will also present their sand works to the theme of “Imagination”, and acclaimed local sand artist JOOheng Tan will create interactive sand art pieces every week. If you happen to visit the island between Mondays and Thursdays, you’ll see the sand master at work.

As for those who shudder at coughing up cash for exorbitantly-priced Sentosa attractions, September is the time to try activities like the Segway miniPro and the Singapore Cable Car Sky Pass, both of which will offer 50 percent discount deals.

Sandsational Fun at Sentosa is on from Sept 1-17, daily 10am-9pm at Siloso Beach, Sentosa. Free.
