Ken Pattern pokes fun at Marina Bay Sands in new exhibition

A Canadian artist based in Jakarta Ken Pattern, has a new collection of works out lampooning Singapore integrated entertainment complex Marina Bay Sands.

The exhibition titled On Marina Bay consists of paintings depicting absurd impressions of the extravagant building.

One painting, “The Wiener Takes All”, replaces the boat-shaped SkyPark with a giant sausage, while another, “Silverado”, shows the same area filled with jungle foliage.

Bananas, hot air balloons and sharks are other elements Pattern has used in his paintings to convey the exhibition’s multiple meanings.

The satirical exhibition reflects Pattern’s feelings about Marina Bay Sands — which he says promotes hedonistic consumerism — and Singapore as a country.

To The Jakarta Post, he described the complex as “a kind of modern Babylon” and “a place of indulgence” that was just “begging to be lampooned”.

“I’m glad Singapore is there,” he reportedly also said. “But I wouldn’t want to live there”.
