Famous Japanese discount store Don Quijote — known in Singapore as Don Don Donki (because there’s already an existing restaurant here by the name) — is opening its doors at Orchard Central on Friday, making it the first store in Asia outside of Japan. Established in 1978, the brand currently has 368 stores in Japan, Hawaii, and the United States.
The sprawling space here takes up two basement levels in the Orchard Road mall and is home to a massive selection of discounted Japanese products — about 30,000 in total — from beauty items and soft toys to snacks and costumes to household goods and groceries.
Basically, it’s got everything you could ever want in your discount-loving life — and it’s open 24 hours, seven days a week. Just think of it as the Japanese version of Mustafa, with items going as low as $0.50 (although prices can rise to five-digit numbers when you enter the premium alcohol section).
But before all you CBD workers rush over to town during lunch break to fight your way through the masses, rest assured that the store is already planning to open a second outlet in Tanjong Pagar next June.
With a Hokkaido theme in mind, Don Don Donki displays fresh produce from the region and is partnering with Hokkaido Marche, which will launch its restaurant and food court concept in the premises by end-January. Expect eight self-service outlets and a dinner night market concept, with wallet-friendly prices all around.
If you happen to swing by the store from 4pm onwards, make a pitstop at the Japanese-themed bar for sips of sake, beer, and whiskey to kick-start your after-work drinks.
Don Don Donki opens on Dec 1, 10am, at Orchard Central B1 & B2. Daily 24 hours.
