This month, the arts are coming to a neighbourhood near you. Returning for another edition in March, Arts in Your Neighbourhood will feature over 30 free performances and activities at 12 islandwide locations, including Tampines, Woodlands, Marina Bay, Buona Vista, Chai Chee, Toa Payoh, Bedok, Ang Mo Kio, Yew Tee and Yishun.
Oh, and get this: The focus this time is on Yishun, the town infamously known for its murderers, drug dealers, cat killers, perverts and whatnot. (Okay, it’s also got its own quirks and culture, so let’s focus on that.)
Expect four new works for this season, including A Dragon Behind The Door & More (an immersive, theatrical puppet performance), Muzik Kita — Celebrating Malay Traditional Music (performances by traditional local and international Malay music ensembles), District 27 (a dance revolving around the heritage of Yishun and Sembawang), and Whisper to a Roar (an interactive visual and sound installation where you can compose soundtracks for your favourite neighbourhoods).
Other happenings around the neighbourhoods include The Real Estates, an exhibition by Jean Loo of Logue that chronicles the sights and sounds of Yishun; Hack Our Play by Participate in Design, a hands-on activity that allows young ones to play around with recycled materials to make their own creations; and Popular Pop by the Orchestra Collective — it’s an interactive performance where audiences get to choose their favourite tunes.
Arts in Your Neighbourhood is on from Mar 9-26 at various locations. Free.
