Local actor Elvin Ng does not want to repeat history and be the butt of jokes this year by dressing like a sweet drink at an awards ceremony.

The 42-year-old showed up for the Chinese-language television Star Awards at Marina Bay Sands yesterday in an all-black suit and said he switched it up after making headlines in 2021 for showing up in a two-toned pink suit that users said looked like Bandung, a rose syrup drink.

“After the Star Awards two years ago, you discovered yourself making headlines because of your style,” host Hazel Teo said.

“So this year, I don’t want to look like a beverage,” Ng joked.

Ng said he hopes his black suit comes across as more sexy, mysterious and elegant from the neck scarf and gold accessories.

“I think my stylist and I wanted something different. We didn’t want to look like a drink anymore so I think all these add a bit of adventure and mischief to it so we’re trying to achieve a more mysterious, sexy kind of feel,” he told Channel News Asia in a separate interview.

Meme page SGAG wasn’t giving any chances and compared his suit to black coffee.

Ng was subject to countless memes and fashion criticism after photos of him in the two-toned suit were posted online. Many compared it to Bandung and some even said it looked like a tampon.

But he took it with stride and posted a photo of himself enjoying a Bandung after the ceremony.

Ng was nominated for the Favorite Onscreen Couple in Mister Flower with local actress Rui En at the Star Awards 2023.
