In anticipation of National Day, Singapore Sports Hub held a unique competition — the National Stadium Lights Design Voting Contest let members of the public decide how our iconic stadium would be lit up on Singapore’s 56th birthday. They chose between three eye-catching light designs and also shared what makes them proud to be Singaporean. The number of responses were overwhelming.

Naturally, this open-ended question drew many intriguing and heartwarming answers. The most compelling answer came from See Toh Huixia, a social worker and recreational artist, who said in her winning answer: “The goodness of people here makes my heart swell. All the moments when we look out for each other, look out for the place we live in and the living creatures we share this space with. These moments and people make me super proud we are from the same tribe.”

Huixia revealed that she was very pleasantly surprised to find out that she had won the voting contest and was thankful to be chosen.

When asked what is her favourite memory of Singapore, she shared that she won’t forget the passing of Founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew in 2015: “Like many fellow Singaporeans, I went to pay my last respects. In the sea of people, there was a sense of community and connection. Strangers around me were casually picking up conversations with one another, volunteers gave out food and drinks to those waiting, the police helped with crowd control and shared candidly with the people whatever updates they had, MRT staff at the stations were all smiles and welcoming even at 3am! There was that sense of solidarity that really warmed my heart and filled me with pride to belong to this community.”

We hope Huixia’s inspiring response will warm your hearts too. Happy National Day!
