A quick sweat sesh after leaving the office? Sure, gotta work off that big lunch anyway. A private fitness spot? Well, yeah, it would be nice to exercise without feeling self-conscious about that muffin top stuffed awkwardly into uncool athletic gear.
But… a gym in a box? That’s apparently the first of its kind in Singapore.
The Gym Pod is a 24-hour automatic container gym in the Buona Vista area, tucked away in a container block, with most of the basic equipment you need to exercise your muscles and banish those fats.
Housed in the bright yellow capsule are a treadmill, dumbbells that range from 1kg to 20kg, an adjustable bench, a Smith machine, which is essentially a weight machine used as a self-spotting device, and a speaker that you can connect to your phone to blast your #beastmode tunes. To make things easier, the Gym Pod works as a self-service concept, which means you’ll receive a passcode to open the door after you’ve booked your slot.
For those who may feel slightly unnerved by passers-by staring at you pumping iron or jogging your heart out, you can maintain some semblance of privacy by lowering the blinds.
It’s designed in a way to allow you — and two of your workout buddies — to maximize the tiny space in private, and to train at your own time and pace, with pay-per-use rates that start from $4.17 per hourly session (depending on the package you choose). First-timers can try it out with a one-hour complimentary workout.
Compared to some of the other swanky chains or boutique gyms on the island, this price tag could save you enough dough to eat clean more often (because protein bowls don’t come cheap) — but even though the place is open all day every day, you’ve gotta actually live or work in the area for it to be worth your while. So, here’s hoping the people behind The Gym Pod solidify their plans to expand soon.
