Things are looking pretty good in the world of nail polish right now. Earlier this year, there was Nail Deck, the Singapore-created app that matches the specific shade you want with its closest available polish from a range of brands that you can order from the app itself. Now, the geniuses behind Nail Deck are taking it one step further and making the actual polish in front of your eyes.
All you gotta do is stop by Lacquer Bar, Nail Deck’s three-month VivoCity pop-up in a cosy little front space at nail salon esBoudoir. Bring with you a sample of the exact hue you want — it could be a pair of shoes, your favourite bag or an image of something — and they’ll create your customised concoction in just ten minutes.
Seriously, how cool is that?
Even if you have no idea what colour you’re looking for, just head over for a consultation with the colourist, and they’ll take you through the process. Right now, crème finish is the only option available, but you can look forward to others like shimmer and glitter in the future.
The process of making your nail polish is sorta science-y, but basically they use a spectrometer to analyse the colour, then an in-house algorithm to convert the digital colour into a formula. After that, you get to watch them blend your nail polish by hand — it’s fascinating, in a back-to-school chem lab kind of way.
And if you’re super picky about your nail colour, fret not. You get to paint on a complimentary sample and view it under white and warm light first. Any adjustments you want can still be made, and you’ll only receive your final result when you’re totally satisfied. At the end of it all, come up with a name for the colour you just created, and it’ll be printed out on the sticker of your bottle.

Looks like the possibilities are pretty much endless for all you nail polish lovers.
Lacquer Bar pop-up will go from now till Dec 31, Tues-Sun 11am-7pm at esBoudoir, #02-227 VivoCity, 1 Harbourfront Walk. $11 for 5ml bottle. $16 for 10ml bottle.
