Retail therapy aside, Orchard Road is now home to the newest co-working space in Singapore. Military in name and theme (sort of), The General Room is a fancy-looking facility that claims to be run like an army base — with precision, respect, and efficiency — and aims to attract businesses in the fashion, financial, and wealth management industries.

It’s also the first co-working concept by Malaysian company LGB Somerset Investment on our shores.

Work spaces include hot desks (from $500/month), private rooms (from $1,000/month), meeting rooms (from $60/hour), and conference rooms (from $100/hour). Start-ups who want a business address for mailing purposes can use it as a virtual office (from $145) as well.

Amenities range from high speed Wi-Fi and office supplies to cleaning services, use of the members’ lounge, and a full-stocked pantry.

The rooms are pretty basic-looking, so if you’d rather work in a nicely-decked out space, the lounge area and bar is spruced up with lush leather sofas and exposed bulbs hanging from the ceiling. It’s also open for event bookings (from $1,000/four hours).

If you happen to be in town and you’ve exhausted all the cafe options on the stretch, The General Room offers $50 one-day passes as well, so you can have a quiet place to work without having to make a cup of coffee last five hours.
