Fully booked: Hundreds sign up to race with a thorny fruit in hand at the Durian Run

When it comes to running, there are those who train mercilessly for serious marathons, and then there are those who need a reason to run (like us). That’s probably why fun runs in Singapore are aplenty — we’ve got The Music Run, The Hello Kitty Run, The Color Run, and even the world’s first Teh Tarik Run.

So of course it was only a matter of time till someone came up with the Durian Run. Seems like it’s happened before, but this time, it’s for charity. Basically, participants can do whatever they need to do to hold on to their durians as they complete the 5km run — that includes getting creative with gloves, plastic bags or backpacks.

If you’re thinking that sounds like it has the potential to see spikes fly everywhere, the organizers have maintained that medical assistance will be on standby, as safety is a priority.

Even if you end up losing your durian somewhere, or you don’t carry the thorny fruit for the entire route, you won’t be forced to do anything against your wishes. (After all, it is a fun run.) At the finish line, participants will get a coconut and a medal, and the choice to get their durians cracked open for a mass durian party.

The Durian Run, organized by the Central Singapore CDC and the Ang Mo Kio-Hougang CCC, has proven to be so popular that all 388 slots were filled less than a week after the event registration opened. Proceeds will go to the Ang Mo Kio-Hougang Community Development Welfare Fund.
