No plans to fly abroad yet? Instead, take off in Sentosa’s new panoramic ride and dangle your pandemic stress away.

Initially scheduled to launch early next year, the SkyHelix Sentosa located at Imbiah Lookout will open Dec. 15, just in time for school holidays and end-of-year festivities.

Dangle your feet in the air, take photos and sip drinks while enjoying a 360-degree view of Sentosa on the open-air ride that lifts guests up 35 meters from the ground via a rotating gondola that moves “gently,” as emphasized at a news briefing today.

“The concept is really to provide guests an outdoor experience to actually enjoy scenic views and really the attraction itself for the vertical light helix structure is very iconic. The iconic visual marker for Imbiah is an Instagram-worthy post for a backdrop,” Favian Ooi, director of Mount Faber Leisure Group, said.

“What’s unique about the structure and the experience is that day and night experiences are totally different. What happens during the day, the views that you see are totally different from the evening.”

The 12-minute ride, located with 11 other attractions including cable cars at the island’s Imbiah Lookout station, is powered by electrical winches that move the gondola up along rails. Think Singapore Flyer, but moving vertically.

Its normal capacity of 16 passengers is halved to eight due to the pandemic.

To ensure safety, the ride has built-in emergency brakes and a backup power supply. Guests are fastened in with seat belts and accompanied by an operator, who can even help take photos for the Gram.

The group has not revealed how much was spent on the attraction.

SkyHelix is marketed as Sentosa’s first carbon-neutral attraction. It is fully electric and operating it one year will generate the equivalent of a flight from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, it said. The group said it is weighing the installation of solar panels to offset those emissions.

The ride is suitable for all ages with a minimum height of 1.05 meters. Children under 12 are required to be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets – S$18 for adults and S$15 per child 4 to 12 – are available now. All purchases come with a choice of a nonalcoholic beverage or SkyHelix souvenir.
