Five kawaii buys from Rakuten Singapore

Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten has finally launched in Singapore.

As of Dec. 3, those living in Singapore can now order made-in-Japan products without having to pay for international shipping.

Rakuten, which recently acquired Singapore-based streaming site Viki for a reported SGD200 mil, is touted as the no. 1 online shopping mall in Japan and it’s no wonder — they’ve got some great stuff.

We went on the online marketplace the moment we heard the news — here are some of the cutest products we’ve got on our Christmas shopping list.

1. Half pint mini carton creamer, SGD11.50

If you’re exchanging gifts with a bunch of house proud friends, take this! It looks just like one of those milk cartons they’d give out in primary school, except this one’s for adults i.e. made completely out of hand-blown glass.

2. Ice Cannibals skull and crossbones ice trays, SGD7.50

[[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”37110″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”502″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”600″}}]]

This will make a great gift for the friend fascinated by the morbid, or anyone with a taste for the extraordinary. We’re a bit of both so we’re getting this for ourselves.

3. Japanese mabu umbrella, SGD12.90 — 14.90

[[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”37112″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”418″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”600″}}]]

Not sure how useful it’s going to be for walking in heavy rain, but we’re sure it works just fine in a light drizzle or for protection against the sun (and you know Singapore gets a lot of that). At the moment it comes in two versions — long and folding (short) — and three pretty colours.

4. Pure copper omelette frying pan, SGD125.56

[[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”37114″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”471″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”600″}}]]

Stop wondering how the Japanese make such perfectly shaped omelettes for slicing and rolling up and try it yourself with this gorgeous pan. It’s got a good wooden grip and lid, and ensures minimal fuss during washing.

5. Toshiba waterproof clock radio, SGD71.41

This gadget reminds us of old school Japanese doramas, though we’re banking there are still some households that have it in this smartphone generation. One can never have too many alarm clocks to kick off the side table is what we say.

We know you’re excited (we are, too) so — here — happy shopping! And follow Rakuten’s updates on Facebook so you don’t miss out on deals.
