Update: Carousell said today that it took down all mispriced or fake listings that were marked up at exorbitant prices, as per its platform policy.
The highly anticipated McDonald’s set meals in collaboration with the BTS K-pop group made landfall in Singapore this morning, sending the BTS Army (as well as scalpers) in a frenzy.
The meals, wrapped in purple-themed packaging, reportedly sold out within minutes of its 11am launch at outlets such as Choa Chu Kang, Hougang, and Jurong. On the infamous buy-and-sell platform Carousell, supposedly cleaned out and empty packaging were listed for ridiculous prices (S$100,000 for an empty purple box? Be our guest).
“Will bless you hoping one of their BTS members will appear in your dream every night,” Carousell seller “luzijian” wrote in an attempt to lure fans. It was one of hundreds that went up on the platform today.
Another reseller, “jonastayky,” promoted the cup for S$100 (US$70) with an ASMR video of a drink being poured into it.
“In very good condition, poured and filled up carefully with love. Comes with a special ASMR video of the pouring process that only the new owner can enjoy,” jonastayky wrote.
Those reselling the meal packaging online also claimed that the items were “new” or “cleaned.”
The fast food giant’s BTS-themed meal, priced S$8.90 (US$6.62) in Singapore, is made up of what was supposedly favorites of the BTS members – chicken nuggets, fries, coke, and sweet chili and Cajun sauce. Singapore is one of the last few countries to welcome it, after the global rollout began in the United States on May 26. Many fans said they were “extremely disappointed” that Singapore’s leg of the campaign did not include the BTS-themed paper bag.
The BTS meals were sold via delivery platforms in Singapore, avoiding crowds at its restaurants.
